04 · A one-word hedge boxed in commas sounds choppy
Source: The One in the Chair, ch01, ¶8. Reported by the author.
…the thing that passed for kindness in this job — not softness, exactly, but attention.
Heard: "not softness — exactly — but attention": three short stops, so the contrast not X but Y falls apart.
Author's fix: "not softness exactly, but attention". One pause, before but.
Rule (speech-flow): drop the commas around a one-word hedge (exactly, really, quite, perhaps…) when it sits right before but / and / or / yet. This is the opposite of case 02's "by all accounts", where a multi-word interrupter mid-clause needs commas to breathe. New scanner check: hedge boxed in commas (choppy).
