Improvements · Case 03 · skill: speech-flow · fixed (applied to ch01)
03 · No breath before the result in a long "so … that"
Source: The One in the Chair, ch01, ¶15. Reported by the author after the first speech-flow run missed it.
people spent so much of their lives arguing about who they were that by the time they died, most of them were almost relieved to be told, finally, definitively, what they'd amounted to.
Heard: the sentence runs straight from the cause ("arguing about who they were") into the result ("that by the time they died…") with no pause, so it blurs.
Author's fix: a pause before that: "arguing about who they were, that by the time they died". Strict grammar doesn't want a comma in so … that, but for the ear the pause is what marks the turn.
Rule (speech-flow): a long so X … that with no comma before that gets one. New scanner check: so…that without a breath before 'that'.
